What P0340 means
"Camshaft position sensor A circuit" names the circuit of the sensor that reports where the camshaft is, with A marking the first of them on an engine that may have several. Like its crankshaft counterpart P0335, the name is about the circuit rather than any figure, and the computer uses the two together to know how the engine is turning.
This is a standard code. It means the same thing on every make of vehicle.
What the program shows for P0340
The program has no camshaft position reading; Engine speed and Ignition timing are the related live traces on the Dashboard, and the Full scan's on-board self-tests include the EGR and VVT results, the variable valve timing side being where camshaft position is put to work. The freeze frame tab lists what the car stored when the code was set.
The Dashboard's Misfire count cards show one counter per cylinder once the engine is running, next to the Engine speed and Ignition timing traces. The Full scan's On-board self-tests give each cylinder's misfire count for the last ten drives and this drive with its share of the total, and a recorded drive works out a misfire rate over that recording for the Analysis screen and the printed report. The Inspection screen shows whether the Misfire detection monitor is done or still running.
