What P0442 means
"Evaporative emission control system leak detected, small leak" is a size, not a location. The car pressurises or draws down the fuel vapour system and watches how the pressure holds; this code is filed when the result fell into the band the standard calls a small leak. P0455 is the same test landing in the large-leak band, and P0456 in the very small one.
This is a standard code. It means the same thing on every make of vehicle.
What the program shows for P0442
The Full scan's on-board self-tests carry the EVAP leak result with the limits the car judged it against, which is the test this code comes from. Evap purge and Fuel level are the live readings on the Dashboard, and the Inspection screen reports whether the fuel vapour system monitor has completed since codes were last cleared.
The Dashboard shows Commanded EGR, EGR error, Evap purge, Catalyst temp, O2 sensor (rear), Fuel level and Coolant temp. The Full scan's On-board self-tests list the Catalyst bank, EGR / VVT bank, EVAP leak, EVAP purge flow, EVAP purge valve and Secondary air results as PASS, FAIL or NO RESULT against the car's own limits, and the Inspection screen shows whether the Catalytic converter, Fuel vapour system, Exhaust gas recirculation and Secondary air injection monitors are done or still running.
