What P0301 means
"Cylinder 1 misfire detected" is the same count as P0300 filed against one cylinder: the computer recorded firings in cylinder 1 that did not produce the power they should have. The number in the name is which cylinder the engine computer calls 1, which is not always the one nearest the front. The code carries the count and the cylinder, and nothing else.
This is a standard code. It means the same thing on every make of vehicle.
What the program shows for P0301
The Misfire cyl 1 card on the Dashboard is that cylinder's own live counter, and the very first misfire colours it, so it never sits unpainted looking like a reading that never arrived. The Full scan gives cylinder 1 its count for the last ten drives and for this drive beside every other cylinder's, which is how one cylinder's count is read against the rest.
The Dashboard's Misfire count cards show one counter per cylinder once the engine is running, next to the Engine speed and Ignition timing traces. The Full scan's On-board self-tests give each cylinder's misfire count for the last ten drives and this drive with its share of the total, and a recorded drive works out a misfire rate over that recording for the Analysis screen and the printed report. The Inspection screen shows whether the Misfire detection monitor is done or still running.
